ACTION ALERT: Urge Secretary Clinton to take on a human rights agenda in Vietnam
Attention all readers! Secretary Clinton is scheduled to arrive in Vietnam sometime in July. Before she leaves Hanoi, let’s make sure she presses for the release of Vietnam’s human rights defenders.
WHY? According to the Human Rights Watch, the Vietnamese authorities sent at least 24 rights human rights defenders to prison in 2011. The majority were detained under Article 88 (conducting propaganda against the state) or Article 79 (subversion).
These vaguely defined charges have been employed to imprison hundreds of peaceful activists in the last decade such as bloggers Dieu Cay (Nguyen Van Hai) and Paulus Le Son, musician Viet Khang, labor organizer Do Thi Minh Hanh and now democracy activist Dr. Nguyen Quoc Quan.
A mathematician, former high school teacher and longtime democracy activist, Dr. Quan was recently arrested by the Vietnamese government at Tan Son Nhat Airport on April 17.
Secretary Clinton’s voice is critical at a time when the Vietnamese government has escalated its aggression towards its people and taken concerted steps to silence peaceful dissent.
Join the voices calling for the release of Vietnam’s human rights defenders. Send an email to Secretary Clinton, today.
